I sang this song in my cover band FOR YEARS this way. One day, a really polite older gentleman pointed out to me on stage that, while Jimi was known to light one up, the real lyrics (Bob Dylan's) were altogether sedate.
From that moment on... I STILL sang it wrong, because it makes so much more sense! The real lyrics are wacky.
