I grew up in Austria. I never heard Edelweiss before (virtually no one in Austria knows it - it is a complete lie that this is the national anthem).
When I was 16, I watched a documentation on TV 'bout "The Sound of Music" and the image of Austria in the world. When I first heard "Edelweiß" I heard "Blumenkohl forever", and asked myself "why would they sing about a cauliflower? What's so special about them?"... Some days later I saw parts of the rerun of the documentation, and heard "bloom and grow".. I nearly wet my pants.
