Unfortunately I can't claim this brilliantly misheard lyric as my own - it was a friend of mine in the early 90's. He was on the dancefloor in a local rock club and everyone watched in puzzlment as he waved at complete strangers in time to the music (of course nobody told him the real lyrics until after the song had finished and he'd done his 'special waving dance' to every chorus). Maybe the Chili's should have used my friend's version of the lyrics - it would have been an audience-participation smash hit!
