This song was on the radio constantly in 1975, when my sister, my brother and I were driving to our new home in California from New York. As a 6-year-old, I quietly interpreted the song as 'killing me softly with his thumb.' and it stuck in my brain that way for nearly a quarter century until Lauren Hill covered it. ''It's SONG, you idiot, SONG,'' said a friend when I asked him what the significance of killing somebody softly with one's thumb is.
