The story:

I was told that I was adopted when I was five years old, and have always been emotionally isolated (I was finally properly diagnosed as being bipolar about two years ago). I saw some kind of wish-fulfillment in this song that applied to my condition. Considering how often this lyric is misheard, it's one of those songs that seem to be open to interpretation, and I took it to a very personal level.
