This song came on the radio when my Dad was driving. At the time, I was a teenager. He said, "What's he saying?" I said, "I think he's saying 'A year has passed since I broke my nose.'" My Day said, "No, I think he's saying, 'A year has passed since I wrote my note.'"

I knew from the start it must have been "wrote my note", but it does sound a lot like "broke my nose".
