Is there a word for the inverse of a
mondegreen? Because that's what this apparently
is.
Since this song was on the Top 40 back in the
seventies, being infamous for my hearing
dyslexia, I was always absolutely positive that
I was mishearing this phrase as "alligator
lizards in the air." "There is just no way this
can be the actual lyrics," I thought. So after
all these years, I finally got around to
looking it up, and what do you know. It IS
"alligator lizards."
So here we have an example of the phenomenon
turned inside-out. How often does that happen?
