"And I'm going back to New Orleans
    To where that varmint came."

    Artist: The Animals
Real Lyric: The last 2 lines of the last verse should read: "And I'm going back to New OrleansTo wear that ball and chain."

    The story:

I was "of the 60's" so grew up with the music of The Animals, Beatles et al.

I recall hearing this Animals track as a special pre-release airing by our local radio station in Vancouver in July 1964, and obviously mishead the last line. Every listen after that for at least 10 years reinforced this mistake! Although I can't play much, I've had an accoustic guitar for years, and it wasn't until I found the sheet music during the late 1970s that I actually saw the lyrics in print. I then realised that for over 10 years I'd sung the song wrong whenever it was played on the radio, by a band at a gig or whereever. My close friends who learned of this mistake still break out into guffaws of laughter when we reminisce on my mistake!
