The story:

Last Friday, we were learning it in my band, and someone had brought the words. I was not terribly embarrassed but finally the song made some kind of sense! It does say "the waiter" earlier, but I thought the chorus was still talking about the waiter whose face was the one turning a whiter shade of pale, which also made no sense because it should have been "waitress". I did sing it wrong a few times even after I knew, out of habit.
