The story:

Californication is actually my favorite RHCP song, and it's already got a pretty cynical light to it since it's about how the music industry in California basically screws you over (hence, "Cali(fornia) fornication"). I thought that "hear this fear" meant ANTHONY'S fear that he's also being screwed over by the music industry, and his fear that he might end up offing himself or otherwise coming to ruin due to his drug addiction like Kurt Cobain did. I still think my lyric makes way more sense with the song's metaphor and I actually still sing it that way, but hey, I didn't write it.
