The story:

Even though I actually KNEW the influence Charlie Parker had over
Steely Dan, I misheard that lyric as a teen and was in college,
singing along to that song as it was being played by a deejay in a
college bar, when a friend majoring in jazz theory -- of all things -
- spit out his beer and corrected me. Then I considered the rest of
the lyrics and said. "Of course that makes sense. How could I be
THAT stupid!" To defend myself, I said that perhaps a Pakistani cab
driver used to drive Mr. Parker to his gigs. Hey, it was New York. It
