I always suspected I was wrong, but no matter how closely I listened that's always how I heard it - although I also thought it could have been "I adore ya" (more plausible but not as funny)

Incorrect, the real lyric IS : "Deep in my heart, I abhor ya". Listen carefully, or watch the videos of Eddy Grant's live performances of "Electric Avenue". It is obvious when watching that he is saying "abhor ya" . Somehow this myth has circulated on the internet to the point that cover bands even incorrectly sing "am warrior". Which makes no sense.
