    When I looked up the lyrics this morning.

    But I think my version is better, as I've always interpreted the song as an end-of-the-world scenario. So it makes sense that a person may have dug a little well to get water, if infrastructure has been so destroyed (by war, or whatever) that water is no longer being piped into people's homes.
