I used to be in a garage band in the 60s and we performed this song, I sang the lyrics as I thought I heard them. I always thought it was meant as a dig against socialized medicine.
I did not hear the difference untill quite recently and checked the lyrics online. Now I wonder how many people who heard me sing it wrong ever realized it, or what a dufus they must have thought I was for getting them so wrong.
