For there's a God, and there's a sad old heartbreak

The story:

For 54 years I believed that my lyrics were
correct. I have always liked the song. I wanted to
learn it to play it, and was surprised when several
different sources (and Wikipedia) all said I was
wrong.

Which means over the last 47 years when I've been
singing along to the song I was singing the
incorrect lyrics. And nobody ever said anything
about it (at least not to my face).
