The Story: Don't eat the fruit in the garden, Eden,, It wasn't in God's natural plan., You were only a rib,, And look at what you did,, To Adam, the father of Man.
The Story: You smell like goat, I'll see you in hell
I was listening to a compilation album where Peter was telling the story behind the song. I had thought that Himmelman, with his wry sense of humor, had written about a particularly ugly girl, but then had to apologize later ("Susan, I owe you an apology") because she was also mannish enough to beat him up (woman with the strength...).
The actual story was about a completely paralyzed woman he met, who could only communicate by selecting letters on a screen via facial muscle movement, who impressed him with her spirit, humor and courage. He was embarassed by all of the little petty things that he felt put upon on by life.
Obviously, I had missed the point of the song, and when I heard him explaining, I got this sinking feeling in my gut, ran to grab the CD liner notes and read the lyrics for the first time.
D-oh!
