Actually, a friend misheard these lyrics. We were on the train, and listening to the CD with a headphone splitter. She said to me, "Why is he like that? What's so wrong with his wife?" and after I gave her a puzzled look, she explained her version of the lyrics.
I was cracking up, because at the time, Kurt was married to Courtney, and I have to say, I somewhat agreed with my friend's version of the song, not being a Courtney Love fan! I explained the real lyrics, and that Cobain hadn't even met Love when this song was written!
What the heck is "write-a-wife" anyway? She never explained that one!
