When I first heard this song when I was six, and I heard that lyric, I was wondering why he was pulling splinters from his hat. I thought he had his hat on an old wooden hat rack, and there were bits of wood in the hat, and he pulled them out. But what I didn't get was, why did he flinch when he pulled them out of his hat?
