The Story: Don't eat the fruit in the garden, Eden,, It wasn't in God's natural plan., You were only a rib,, And look at what you did,, To Adam, the father of Man.
The Story: You smell like goat, I'll see you in hell
I never thought that these lyrics were
wrong for many years. Even when I was
a teenager they made perfect sense.
After all, Simon and Garfunkel are
Jewish, and the song was written in the
late '60's, as hippies were coming into being and expressing pride in their long hair. Plus, Simon and Garfunkel had the shaggy look going on.
So I figured it was a lyric about a guy
who is Jewish, and he's proud of it and
proud of being a hippie. I just thought
that Simon and Garfunkel were a couple
a' happy, hairy Jews.
I don't remember exactly when I realized I was wrong, but I do recall
that as I got older I started to realize that those couldn't possibly be
the lyrics. A few years ago I looked it
up on the internet and saw the real
lyrics. My first reaction was basically
"Well, duh."
