I was actually unsure about another part of the song, and was amazed at how I'd been wrong for so long. I'd sort of imagined that his dog dying was some kind of hard luck story that he kept repeating, or else that if just had a really bad run of luck with dogs. Note to editors: I actually misheard this in the Neil Diamond version, should it be moved?
