The story:

My college roommate and I had a heated debate over this phrase of the song. I was convinced it was a love metaphor that Macy was so upset she had to overcome barriers, such as metaphoric hurdles, when he was not there. And she thought that Macy wore goggles when he was not there. Needless to say, we were both wrong, and neither option makes much sense. Now it's just a big joke and we laugh at each other.
