I always heard the song that way when I was in high school. Seeing the title on MTV helped. I guess there actually was a song by the Rolling Stones or somebody that said "I wanna be your dog"... something like that. Made sense to me.
Now I have my 4-year-old son singing "I wanna be a dog"! :D

I think the song the other song you are talking about is I Wanna be Your Dog by Iggy Pop & the Stooges. :) But yeah, to be completely honest, I misheard it the exact same way! So you are not alone. Lol ^^

It was The Stooges who did "I Wanna Be Your Dog". I couldn't understand why the Stone Roses would just say the same thing again. I can actually identify much more with the proper SR lyrics.
