The story:

I Thought it was sung from a female point of view, with a lady telling the man to get himself together and show some responsibility and support if he really wants to marry her. Was recounting this for friends and trying to figure out who sings it (i think i was more familiar with the Supremes version) during a drunken karaoke night. Always thought that was the lyric and was fairly embarrassed for not knowing who sang it as well as misunderstanding the entire basis of the song.
