Let me put it this way: I'm a baby boomer and it took until perimenopause to figure this one out...I always pondered why Rod would write those lyrics which made no sense. Knees don't have eyes and if they did, why would he break one? I decided to look it up and found out I'd been so wrong for so long and felt like a complete goofhead. However, I don't like Rod Stewart as his songs tend to be so shmaltsy so I never sang this song too much anyway.
