The story:

This is how I was singing along to the song, in my misheard way. Finally found out the true lyric after I bought the song, from the 'bargain basement' a few years after radio had stopped playing it (which wasn't very long as radio sidelined it anyway, only playing it a few times and then removing it from air... shame!).

It still often sounds like my misheard lyric and I still sing it along as my misheard way... my lyrics neither better nor worse than the actual ones.
