I always thought he was talking about going back to the stars (in a metaphorical sense, saying he was going to leave the world behind or something).
I then talked to my acquaintance about the song, and he said: "I always misheard it as "going back to the starS"; it would've been so much better this way." and I said: "Wait, it's not "going back to the stars"? Ohh..."
