I always figured that Joel was using the French word for "realist", thereby pointing out how pretentiously pseudo-intellectual Paul was. I even posted to a newsgroup that many people erroneously sang "real estate". The forum regulars quickly, and repeatedly, let me know how wrong I was. I know at least one person who believed the lyric to be "really staid novelist", which also seems more appropriate than "real estate novelist".
