When I first heard this song when I was a young boy, I always thought he was singing "'scuse me while I piss the sky". That's what I kept hearing for almost 10 years until I finally read the lyrics.

I saw Jimi on Feb. 24 , 1968 at the CNE Coliseum in Toronto and he performed the 'Purple Haze' line in exactly the same way "lumberjack" describes. Jimi sang "kiss this guy" , and as he sang it he gestured toward Noel Redding with a wry smile. This line stood out because I was singing along to myself at the time and noticed Jimi sang it differently. I did go home wondering what was the original line. On "Experienced' I hear "kiss the sky" and have come to assume Jimi found something in the song to play with, and first recorded it "kiss the sky" but then went on to play with the line, introducing new ideas and meanings, just as Leonard Cohen has continued to play with or change lyrics after making the first recording of a song. Artist's songs are not etched in stone but are more like castles made of sand. Gusto68

Not only is it often misheard as this but Hendrix must have heard it too. He very intentionally sings " 'Scuse me while I kiss this guy" on his live album called "'69" which I believe was recorded at his Isle of Wight concert.

Never heard anything other than this, even convinced many people these were the right lyrics. You can hear both and its so close, easily hear it wrong but once you know, you can still hear both, which isn't always the case.
