I heard this song as a kid, and since my English wasn't that great at the time, I just thought that this ment that the water was running slowly (flood and flow would both be "flomme" in my language....)
I grew up never really paying attention to the song, as it is not one of my favourite songs. The embarrassing moment occurred when my husband played the song on CD, and I started to sing the way I had remembered it from 20 years ago! *S*
