For years I had sung this wrong and nobody ever corrected me (I heard it as a kid so my lyrics made prefect sense to me). I realized I had the wrong lyrics when I had just started college and was at a freshman social. When this song came on, I started singing along and everyone started laughing - they of course thought I was intentionally singing this wrong so I played along. This was before online lyrics so I wasn't sure of real lyrics until much later. I can't help it, when I hear this song, I still sing the wrong lyrics.
