I just always assumed "she refused to
weave an answer" were the real lyrics. I had
cassettes and they didn't have the lyrics
included. So when I got my first Joel CD
when I was 18 or so, I was reading along to
the lyrics of all the songs and saw for the
Stranger "to even answer" and couldn't
believe it. I listened and then realized "my"
line sounds exactly the same as the "real"
words, but I think "my" version (which I just
always assumed was Joel's version) is
actually better and more poetic
