I'm not sure how old I was when I heard the lyrics correctly, but I misheard them for two reasons: First, I didn't think song lyrics were supposed to make sense until I was in my teens. Second, the American phase of the Viet Nam War was coming to a close around the time the single came out, so I heard the country's name on TV and in adults' conversations a lot then.
