The story:
For a while I thought that was the weirdest lyric ever, but since I couldn't hear anything different, I eventually just went with it. I thought the guy in the song was catching a random scent of something like a perfume his girlfriend wore, and was feeling the heartbreak all over again.
After about a decade of this, I heard someone sing it on American Idol who did it clear enough that I knew what the real line was, and immediately fell off the couch laughing at myself.
