I was aware of the correct lyric before I had heard the song through for the first time. But I was quite young then, and the Superman comics I was heavily into at that time often featured dematerialisers of one form or another, used as weapons or punishment. Reminded of it recently when a newsgroup thread discussed why the end of the world had not materialised as promised on 21 May 2011.
