THE MISHEARD:
There's a bathroom on the right
Media
The story:
I was at a party and someone asked where the bathroom was.
Instead of just answering, I sang the words "there's a bathroom
on the right." Everyone burst out laughing, and it wasn't until
someone explained it to me that I realized I had been completely
wrong for five years.

I should sing that the next time someone asks me for directions to the bathroom and see how they react!

I heard this as I singing it in the car on the radio and my mom laughed when I got to that part and corrected me. It seemed to fit the song because the singer is like a narrator who tells of these horrible things that are happening and knows the audience is nervous and may need to know where the bathroom is.

John Fogerty actually sings it that way at the end of live versions.

Saturday Night Live used this lyric in their "Misconceptions" spoof commercial for a music compilation cd, "the songs you thought you knew." Thanks to that, I've always sung it this way too.

Funny enough there is a parody of this song on Bobrivers.com called "Bathroom on the right" http://www.bobrivers.com/#v8470 so thats funny, it DOES sound like bathroom though!

my husband always sang it like that to be funny (and it was the first time b/c i had never heard it before) according to him it is a well established misquote. in 2008 we went to see john fogerty and he actually sang it that way one time and even pointed to the right!!! We both rolled!!!! The Revival tour...good concert-great seats.

It could also be misunderstood as "There's a baboon on the ride", as in a ride at an amusement park.

I guess you would be in for nasty weather if this guy is searching that bad for a bathroom.

Strangely enough, CCR did use "There's a bathroom on the right!" in one gig. I guess they needed a little joke.

Apparently, "Weird Al" Yankevic thought this was a keeper, too, since he recorded a parody of "Bad Moon Rising" to this effect!
